Daily Archives: May 2, 2012

I keep an eye on the stats for this blog-site because:

  1. I want to know what my readers are interested in
  2. I have nothing better to do.

That being said, the post I did a while back – Mens Fashion: Mantyhose – has been a big time hit. Nearly every day, I see “Mantyhose” (What a wretched name!) or tights come up in the list of search terms. Moreover, these queries are coming from all over the world.

Since this is my day for follow-ups, you may be interested to learn that the women’s legwear blog-site mentioned in my first article on this subject has released a second post on Mantyhose – the term was coined by Women’s Wear Daily – containing quotes about this growing trend from retailers, manufacturers, fashion editors, et al.

I am going to let the post on the Fashion My Legs blog-site do the talking for me.

Today is devoted to “follow-ups” here at The Parsons’ Rant and this post is a follow-up to yesterday’s post on software uninstallers. Since I have not updated Revo Uninstaller for a while and I was using the free-ware version anyway, I decided to compare it to Your Uninstaller and see how the two products did on finding applications to uninstall. The first thing I did was to install Your Uninstaller and then use it to remove my old free-ware copy of  Revo. Once completed, I’d install the latest version of Revo & let them go mano a mano.

To make a long story short, here are the results of my tests:

REVO UNINSTALLER

  • Found a total of 167 applications (212 if you include Windows updates)
  • Has 4 options for removal. The lowest is to use the application’s own uninstall routine if it exists. The highest is to remove the application and scrub any trace of it from your Registry as well as the rest of your System.
  • Has a “Forced Uninstall” feature
  • Creates a restore point so you can reverse the uninstall if need be.
  • Price for the Pro version is $39.25 but the installation process will bring up a web page that lets you buy the Pro version for just under $20.00)

YOUR UNINSTALLER

  • Found a total of 207 applications (262 if you include Windows updates)
  • Has 4 options for removal. The lowest is to use the application’s own uninstall routine if it exists. The highest is to remove the application and scrub any trace of it from your Registry as well as the rest of your System. (Only available in the purchased version)
  • Has an “Advanced Uninstall” feature. (I was unable to determine if this was the same thing as Revo’s)
  • Creates a restore point so you can reverse the uninstall if need be.
  • Price is currently $29.99 (Regularly $39.99)
  • Has a feature that will give you a hint about what the application does. Doesn’t work properly in the trial version but can be disabled
This comparison was performed using trial/free-ware versions. Not all of the features were enabled in either uninstaller nor were corresponding features disabled in both uninstaller. I tested both uninstallers against different applications that I wanted remove. Both seemed to perform a competent job based on the functions available in the free/trial versions.
At the end  of the day, Your Uninstaller seems to give you just a bit more in the purchased version. OTOH, Revo Uninstaller lets you do a bit more in the free-ware version. Finding all of the applications is a bit more important in my case so I think that I’ll pony up the $29.99 for Your Uninstaller. In the meantime, I’ll hang on to Revo Unistaller’s free-ware version for a while.
